What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?
Matt got Lasix, completed his first Spartan race, and climbed a 14er. Alicia went snowboarding, became an adjunct professor.
Did you keep your new year’s resolution and will you make more for next year?
Yes. Last year, “Disciple” constantly was in our brain so we really was intentional with that — we read several books about intentional discipleship, we continued our life group twice a month; we lead 2 different other small groups at our church, we asked a couple to disciple us the year and we meet with them once a month.
Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes! We welcomed our niece Briella. Our friend Sarah welcomed sweet baby Ella
Did anyone close to you die?
What country did you visit?
Just ours. Traveled to Colorado three times. Road trip to Chicagoland.
What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?
More Patience. Healing.

All of the kayaking as a family
What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Matt finished top 2% of the Spartan race, potty training Evy, Ethan can count to 100 and is starting to read, Evy knows her colors! Alicia owning all her mamadays with the kids (solo biking to library!)
What was your biggest failure?
Yelling at our kids
Did you suffer illness or injury?
Alicia had unexpected abdominal surgery. Ethan had stitches after a fall. Ethan has had strep 5 times. Evy had 5 ear infections, RSV, Strep, and countless colds. Alicia’s migraines changed for the worse, saw multiple specialists, trying her best to adjust to the changes.
What was the best thing you bought?
Helmets for Ethan and Evy. Quarter cow to have meat year round in our freezer, frequent tickets to Colorado, exchanged our Honda Civic for Toyota Camry.
Where did most of your money go?
Food. vRadical giving, Compassion International, Savings (trips, Roth)
What did you get really excited about?
Ethan night-time potty trained! And Evy potty trained in 2 days! Expending our Compassion International support and adding a child for Ethan. Ethan OWNING his no-training-wheels bike. IJM and Preemptive Coalition (refugee support).
What do you wish you’d done more of?
A full nights sleep uninterrupted
What do you wish you’d done less of?
Sitting on our butts after 8pm
How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas day was a single gift to each of our kids, followed by the day just as a family together at home.
What was your favorite TV program?
Agents of Shield, Brooklyn 99, The Blacklist
What were your favorite books of the year?
Too many to count.
What one thing would have made your year immeasurable more satisfying?
Not much. We are glad of the choices we have made.
What kept you sane?
Budgeting for once a week babysitter every Thursday night for date night and activities. A clean house. Books that gave us ideas and directions and hope. Our friends, both in the same stage, and stages ahead of us, to walk through life. BEING OUTSIDE!
