everyday. an orchard to ourselves

This weekend was beautiful with an open calendar so we decided to venture to an Apple Orchard. There is something about the transition from the humid summer, to suddenly cool crisp mornings and you can sense fall is here. And suddenly you just want to eat apples. It’s weird. Maybe it’s a minnesota-raised thing. But it’s definitely there.

And guess what? 9am on a holiday weekend at an apple orchard….was empty. I mean. FOR HONEST to GOODNESS we were the ONLY people there for the first hour.

First. Evidently Evy doesn’t like tractor rides. Because we were the ONLY ONES on the tractor (huge orchard by the way. Largest we’ve been to yet!) and she kept saying “done. done. done. done. done”. Ethan tried to comfort. But ya know how that goes.

So we arrived at the empty orchard. Got dropped off. Made sure the guy was going to come back for us at some point, and then it was quiet. Totally still. At 9:15am the sun shown through the trees, a slight rustle of the leaves, and we just picked and ate apples. I’m pretty sure each kid had 5 little apples. Each. So good. They’re like candy!

These next moments completely took my breathe away. Not because my kids are so adorable and my husband is scrumptious (all valid reasons) — but because I felt God kiss us. It was as if this moment of stillness and “solitude togetherness” as a family was orchestrated by God. As if he said, “I love you. And here is beauty I created. Just for my glory. And I’ll share it with you. Just because. Doesn’t matter what you do. Just because.”

After we ate way too many apples (because (OOPS) the cafe doesn’t open until 11am. Who does that?)…..we did all the other activities at the orchard. There was an apple sling, and barn animals, and tons of old tractors to sit on (and if you look closely, you call tell they’re both making tractor “sounds” as they played), and a playground and…you get the idea – the kids loved it. In fact we stayed for 3 full hours. I can’t even stay at our zoo with the kids that long! And the cafe did eventually open for too many donuts and a yummy lunch. It was such a morning for us!!
